The challenge of
development in Bihar is enormous due to persistent poverty, complex
social stratification, unsatisfactory infrastructure, and in many
situations, weak governance. These problems are well known but not well
understood. The people of Bihar - civil society, businessmen,
government officials, farmers, and politicians - also struggle against
an image problem that is deeply damaging to Bihar's growth prospects.
An effort is needed to change this perception, and to search for real
solutions and strategies to meet Bihar's development challenge.

The
main message of this report from our VLE Dinesh Pandey from Rohtas
district is one of hope. There are many success stories not well known
outside Bihar that demonstrate its strong potential, and could in fact
provide lessons for other regions. A boost to economic growth, improved
social indicators, and poverty reduction will require a
multi-dimensional development strategy that builds on Bihar's successes
and draws on the underlying resilience and strengths of its people.
Precisely, that is what SAHAJ Vasudha Kendra is doing in Bihar. As
Dinesh says, people in terrorism affected Rohtas district are now
returning back to normalcy with the help of SAHAJ. SAHAJ is bringing in
e-Governance at their doorsteps, sensitizing their women about RCH,
educating the villagers in computer education, which in turn is making
the young age band techno-savvy and equipped with technical expertise
so that they could face the challenges in the real world. In terror
struck Tiothu, Rohatas, and Chenari the Sahaj CSCs are operating in
collaboration with the local Panchayat to make health, education, and
railway reservation related services available in their locality and
thereby infiltrating their life with comfort and happiness. Dinesh
informs in Rohtas 6,92,562 men are jobless, and the number almost
doubles when it comes to women (10, 09, 740). Many young entrepreneurs
like Dinesh through their SAHAJ Vasudha Kendra are aspiring to change
the fate of their fellow people suffering from feeble agricultural
growth and abysmal poverty. All they want to show is Bihar is changing
and can be changed.
